In the period between August 30th and September 19th two PhD students, Silvija Šafranko and Ana-Marija Cikoš, from Croatia visited our Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa. During their stay, the students worked on the production of dextrins from potato starch and they performed the analysis on the obtained samples. The analysis included both physical and chemical characterization of the dextrins. Moreover, Silvija and Ana-Marija had the chance to present their current research they are working on at Faculty of Food Technology Osijek, University of Osijek. The main focus of Silvija’s research is preparation of nanoparticles and their application in pharmaceuticals, while Ana-Marija’s research encompasses the analysis of macroalgae from the Adriatic Sea and their application in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The gathering was a chance to exchange and create new ideas and friendships, acquire knowledge, skills and competences for working on a science research and linking them together as a basis for a future collaboration.

The 13th International Scientific and Professional Conference „With food to health“ was held on Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences Osijek, from 16 to 17 September 2021. All ByProExtracts team members have participated as a members of organizing committee, scientific committee and during oral and poster presentations and presented their research papers and results from project.
This conference has during two days gather eminent experts from the academic community and industry, pharmacists, medical doctors, and all who are interested in food and food influence on health in any aspect.

Krunoslav Aladić and Marija Banožić, ByProExtract project team members have attended on ERASMUS exchange at the Faculty of Technology Novi Sad. The exchange was realized within the framework of the ERASMUS academic exchange program for (non) teaching staff. This exchange is a continuation of good cooperation between the Faculty of Food Technology Osijek and the Faculty of technology Novi Sad. During the period of four weeks, they have been working on the Department of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Engineering, where they have been working on extraction of citrus waste and production of powders using spray drying process.

The public thesis defense by student Dora Bogadi, entitled „High Voltage Electrical Discharges Assisted Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Citrus Peel” was held on July 14, 2021 at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek. The thesis was written under the mentorship of Stela Jokić, PhD, full professor, principal investigator on ByProExtract project.
The experimental part of the graduate thesis was realized within the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“ (HRZZ-UIP-2017-05-9909). The student presented an excellent quality of her research, and answered the questions of the defense committee. Based on that, the defense committee presented the decision that Dora Bogadi successfully defended her graduate thesis with an excellent grade.

Second International Scientific Conference FOOD INDUSTRY BY-PRODUCTS organized by the Faculty of Food Technology, University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, Public Institution “Nature park“ Kopački rit and European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group – EHEDG (Germany) was held on 28 June in Kopački Rit.
The Conference, the visual identification of the Programme and Book of Abstracts were funded by the Croatian Science Foundation within the project “Application of innovative techniques for extraction of bioactive components from plant by-products” (UIP-2017-05-9909).
The scientific programme of the Congress included 10 invited lectures and presentations of the book ”Some possibilities for utilization of food industry by-products 3″. Lecture entitled “High pressure extraction techniques – challenge and opportunity for by-products of plant origin” was given by Stela Jokić and other lecture titled „Citrus peel as a carbon source in carbon quantum dots technology – investigating the potential biological activity and applications in biomedicine“ was given by Silvija Šafranko. During the presentation, the overall results of the project, as well as future activities were presented.

The international congress on Engineering, Environment and Materials in Process Industry -EEM2021 was organized for the seventh time by the Faculty of Technology Zvornik, University of East Sarajevo. The congress aims to help researchers, scientists and academia to discover new directions in research, development and education, by providing an overview of the state-of-the art findings and trends in the field and offering a platform for the exchange of ideas.
Conference was organized as a hybrid event from March 17th – 19th 2021, Jahorina, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina but also included virtual streaming of all speakers, for those who choose not to attend physically. All the participants was able to present their work as part of a collection of electronic poster presentations. ByProExtracts team members has also participated and presented their research paper within poster presentation.

Stela Jokić, full professor held a popular and online lecture for high-school students and their teachers on the topic “Nusproizvodi prehrambene industrije – bogat izvor bioaktivnih tvari” using Zoom application. This meeting was held as part of the eTwinning project. The most interesting and significant achievements of the ByProExtract team members (HRZZ project) were also highlighted.

ByProExtracts team members participated on CHISA 2021 Virtually, however, given the current epidemiological situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference CHISA 2021 Virtually was held online exclusively in period from 15th to 18th March 2021. One of the topics and subjects of the project is therefore presented by a poster presentation entitled „Facile electrochemical determination and characterization of bioflavonoid hesperidin using disposable pencil graphite electrode – Application in pharmaceutical analysis“ (Šafranko, Silvija; Banožić, Marija; Stanković, Anamarija; Asserghine, Abdelilah; Aladić, Krunoslav; Medvidović-Kosanović, Martina; Jokić, Stela).
