International Conference 19th Ružička Days was traditionally held in Vukovar, Croatia, on the 21th and 23rd September 2022 under the slogan “TODAY SCIENCE TOMORROW INDUSTRY”.
The conference was organized by the Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers (CSCE) and its partners, Faculty of Food Technology of University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, European Chemical Society (EuCheMS), and European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) .

The “Ružička’s Days” is a traditional review of scientific activity from the field of chemistry, chemical & biochemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and related sciences, dedicated to the memory of the famous Croatian chemist and first Croatian Nobel Prize laureate professor Lavoslav (Leopold) Ružička.

The topic of the 19th meeting is “Today Science – Tommorow Industry” since the organizing committee wishes to emphasize the importance of the implementation of science research and achievements. The program was included plenary lectures of invited renowned speakers and scientific poster sessions.
ByProExtracts team members has also participated and presented their research with the poster presentation entitled: INFLUENCE OF DRYING TECHNIQUES ON THE PRODUCT YIELD AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF Citrus unishu PEEL DRY EXTRACTS” by authors: Marija BanožićKrunoslav AladićStela Jokić.

Silvija Šafranko, a ByProExtract team member, participated in the „Natural resources, green technology and sustainable development/4-GREEN2022“ (Zagreb, Croatia), held from 14th-16th September 2022. The participation included poster presentation with the topic: SEPARATION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS FROM MANDARIN PEEL Citrus unshiu USING SUBCRITICAL WATER EXTRACTION“ by the group of authors Silvija Šafranko, Marija Banožić, Ina Ćorković, Martina Jakovljević, Krunoslav Aladić, Stela Jokić.

Third International Scientific Conference FOOD INDUSTRY BY-PRODUCTS organized by the Faculty of Food Technology, Croatian Academy of Engineering (HATZ), Udruženja za nutricionizam i dijetetiku (BiH), European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group – EHEDG (Germany) and Croatian Science Foundation was held on 29th October 2022 in Osijek.  The Conference, the visual identification of the Programme and Book of Abstracts were funded by the Croatian Science Foundation within the project “Application of innovative techniques for extraction of bioactive components from plant by-products” (UIP-2017-05-9909).

The Principal Investigator of ByProExtract project, Stela Jokić, held plenary lecture with the topic: „Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“.

ByProExtract team member, Silvija Šafranko, participated in the 26th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering (Prague, Czech Republic), which will took place from 21-25 October 2022. The participation included poster presentation with the topic: Preparation of Amino Acid Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots from Citric Acid Efficient Fluorescent Nanoprobe for Selective Detection of Fe3+ Ions in Model Systems and in Well Water Samples“ by the group of authors Silvija Šafranko, Kristina Janđel, Monika Kovačević, Maja Dutour Sikirić, Šimun Mandić, Aleksandar Széchenyi, Ivica Strelec, Stela Jokić.

Silvija Šafranko, ByProExtract team member, stayed on the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy in Pecs (University of Pecs) within the ERASMUS academic exchange program for (non) teaching staff for a month. This exchange is a continuation of good cooperation between the Faculty of Food Technology and Engineering in Osijek and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy in Pecs.
During her stay, Silvija has been working on the investigation of innovative and new methods for the by-products utilization, mainly of Citrus clementina peels, for the pharmaceutical purpose. Primarily, this included the fundamental understanding of the meta ion-phenolic acid complexation, but also studies on the thermodynamic and kinetic influences on the complex formation.

ByProExtract team members with their students participated in the 2nd International Student GREEN Conference (organised by the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek in collaboration with the International Federation of Environmental Health and the network of higher education and research institutions), which will took place in Osijek, Croatia from 2-3 June 2022. The participation included poster presentation with the topic: Synthesis of Amino Acid-Functionalized Carbon Quantum Dots from Citrus clementina Peel: Investigating the Antiradical Activity and Selectivity of Metal Ion Detection and with authors Monika Kovačević, Kristina Janđel, Silvija Šafranko, Anamarija Stanković, Stela Jokić.

Marija Banožić took part in the Career Week, an event organized by the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. During the career week, employers, alumni, industry experts and academic staff offered an inspiring programme of talks on careers after finishing education in the Faculty of food technology. Marija Banožić talked about a career in science and the possibilities of working on scientific projects including the ByProExtract project.

Each year the Croatian Science Foundation organizes the special event for young scientistis and PhD Students who are working on the projects, Osijek PhD Café. This year on May 9th 2022, the event was traditionally held in Campus Cafe in the Student Campus Osijek.

The young scientists from four different institutions from University of Osijek presented their scientific topics:
Mia Filipov (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Osijek) – Stručno usavršavanje učitelja matematike i biologije uz primjenu videozapisa nastave
Magdalena Matić (Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences Osijek) – Fiziološki odgovor genotipova pšenice ovisno o infekciji Fusarium vrstama i gnojidbi dušikom
Silvija Šafranko (Faculty of Food Technology Osijek) – Kora citrusa kao izvor ugljika u tehnologiji ugljikovih kvantnih točaka – ispitivanje biološke aktivnosti i potencijalne primjene u biomedicini
Dalibor Tatar (Department of Chemistry Osijek) – Multifunkcionalni visokoentropijski oksidi.

In the period between March 11th and April 8th, Marija Banožić visited Economic University in Wroclaw. During their stay, she worked on encapsulation of hesperidin from citrus peel and performed the analysis on the obtained samples. The analysis included both physical and chemical characterization of the hesperidin microcapsules. Moreover, Marija had the chance to give a lecture about food waste in front of University students and teachers. The gathering was a chance to exchange and create new ideas and friendships, acquire knowledge, skills and competencies for working on science research and link them together as a basis for future collaboration.

Silvija Šafranko and Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team members participated at Meeting of Young Chemical Engineers 2022. The conference was held on from 24 to 25 February 2020 in Zagreb, on Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Zagreb. During the poster sessions, they presented research from ByProExtract project.
First Meeting of Young Chemical Engineers took place in February 1996. on Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb. Since then, it regularly takes place every two years. The Meeting was conceived as a conference where young chemical engineers, and engineers of related professions, can gain first experiences in presenting results of their research. This year, the Meeting was held in its 14th edition.
