Stela Jokić, project leader and Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team member participated at Conference: “Tobacco and tobacco products: yesterday, today, tomorrow”. Conference was organized by Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb on the Zoom platform.
Lecture entitled “ Utilization of tobacco waste materials and by-products” was given by Marija Banožić, ByProExtract Team member.
The public doctoral thesis defense by PhD student Marija Banožić, entitled “Application of innovative extraction techniques of bioactive compounds from tobacco waste” was held on January 21, 2022 at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek. The doctoral thesis was done under the supervision by Stela Jokić, PhD, full professor, and under the the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“ (UIP-2017-05-9909).
PhD student presented her research, after which she answered the questions of the defense committee. On the basis of all this, the defense committee presented the decision that Marija Banožić successfully defended her PhD thesis.

A public PhD dissertation thesis defense by Silvija Šafranko, under the title ”The Preparation and Modification of Carbon Quantum Dots from Citrus clementina: Physico-chemical Characterization and Pharmacological Activity Investigation of the Obtained Nanoparticles” was held on January 18th, 2022 in front of the Committee for accepting the PhD dissertation Thesis, members of the PhD Commission, professors and associates of the Faculty of Food Technology Osijek.
The proposed research will be conducted in the framework of the ByProExtract project.
The public thesis defense by student Dejan Đerić, entitled „ Spray drying in whey protein production” was held on January 13, 2022 at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Technology in Mostar. The thesis was written under the mentorship of Stela Jokić, PhD, full professor, principal investigator on ByProExtract project.
The experimental part of the graduate thesis was realized within the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“ (HRZZ-UIP-2017-05-9909). The student presented an excellent quality of his research, and answered the questions of the defense committee. Based on that, the defense committee presented the decision that Dejan Đerić successfully defended his graduate thesis with an excellent grade.

On December 20, 2021, the 4th Year-end meeting of research group members was held. At the meeting, project member evaluated their work in the last year, and prepared goals for the next year. According to work in the previous year, they are all convinced of the continued successful collaboration on the ByProExtract project and are looking forward to new scientific knowledge.
All project team members were present at the meeting. The meeting was held online through the ZOOM platform due to the current epidemiological situation around COVID-19.
ByProExtract team member, Silvija Šafranko, participated on the 5th Mini Symposium of Section of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry on 30 November, 2021 with an oral lecture entitled „The Preparation and Modification of the Biomass-Derived Carbon Quantum Dots – Investigating their Potential in Biomedical and Pharmacological Application“. Due to the pandemic, the Symposium was held virtually on the Zoom application. Croatian Chemical Society (HKD) and Fidelta d.o.o. were Symposium organizers.
ByProExtracts team members participated on the 3rd „Young Scientist Days“ Conference in Osijek on 30 November. The Meeting was held on Faculty of Medicine and has been organized jointly by Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Food Technology Osijek, Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences Osijek, Department of Biology, Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health and Department of Physics Osijek. The gathering was a chance to exchange and create new ideas and friendships, acquire knowledge, skills and competencies for working on a science-research and teaching field, and link them together as a basis for future joint collaboration.
Stela Jokić, principal investigator on ByProExtract and Silvija Šafranko, ByProExtract team member were members of the Organizing Committee.
Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team member participated with an oral presentation entitled „Extraction of bioactive compounds from tobacco waste“ where she presented results from the ByProExtract project.
The short article about the five PhD students from the small village in Croatia, Čačinci, was published on Thursday, October 28th 2021. The member of our ByProExtract project team, Silvija Šafranko, was also interviewed about her research work and achievements during her PhD studies.

A conference “World Congress on Food Safety and Nutrition Science” was supposed to be held in vivo in Rome, Italy on October 25-26, 2021. However, due to the pandemic, the conference was held virtually. Our member team, Marija Banožić, participated in the conference with an oral presentation entitled: “Effect of high voltage electric discharge on the extraction of phenolic compounds from mandarin (Citrus unishu M. var. okitsu) peel waste” (authors: Marija Banožić*, Silvija Šafranko, Dora Bogadi, Stela Jokić). The conference’s aim is to bring together the experts in Food and Nutrition Science to share their research and knowledge in recent advancements in the food chemistry and industry.
