The Faculty of Food Technology Osijek traditionally organized the 3rd Night of Science held on December 6, 2019, from 6PM – 9PM. Employees and students of the Faculty performed 9 overall interesting workshops, primarily intended for high school students, as well as for the wider population. The novelty of this year’s Night of Science is that our teaching staff held three popular oral lectures regarding food, health and nutrition. Project team members have also participated in the event presenting natural cosmetics (natural soaps, essential oils,…) and emphasizing the importance of “zero-waste” approach.
The project „The Night of Science“ received financial support from the Ministry of Science and Education for the Programs of popularization of science in 2019.

Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team member, has attended on student exchange at the Wroclaw Medical University, Poland. The exchange was realized within the framework of the ERASMUS academic exchange program for (non) teaching staff. This exchange is a continuation of good cooperation between the Faculty of Food Technology and Engineering in Osijek and the Wroclaw Medical University.
During the period of four weeks she has been working on on Department of Pharmacognosy and Herbal medicine, where she has been working on analysis of tobacco waste using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry as well as on biological activities of tobacco waste extracts.
Additionally, the Separation and Production Technology Laboratory at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Maribor is one of the best research laboratories of this kind. Under the guidance of prof. dr. sc. Željko Knez, this department has 19 researchers and 6 active international and bilateral projects (one of which is a Faculty of Food Technology Osijek) and highly developed equipment, especially in the field of supercritical fluid application. The research activity of this laboratory covers the determination of basic thermodynamic and transport properties of systems required for process planning, including experimental determination of basic thermodynamic and transport properties of the system, which are required for process design including experimental determination of phase equilibria, mass transfer study and modelling by the use of thermodynamic and empirical models, design and optimization of conventional and high pressure processes, such as extraction and adsorption for isolation and concentration of active ingredients from natural materials, analytical and preparative chromatography with supercritical fluids and Transfer of processes into industrial scale.

The presentaton of the current projects under supervision of Stela Jokić, full professor, was covered on the television informative show „Županijska panorama“ with the promotion of the „Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“ HRZZ project. Stela Jokić, full professor, along with the PhD students briefly talked about the aims of the projects, as well about the potential contributions of the research to science and industry.

The 12th International Scientific and Professional Conference „With food to health“ was held on Faculty of Agrobiotechnical Sciences Osijek, from 24 to 25 October 2019. All ByProExtracts team members have participated as a members of organizing committee, scientific committee and during oral and poster presentations and presented their research papers and results from project.
This conference has during two days gather eminent experts from the academic community and industry, pharmacists, medical doctors, and all who are interested in food and food influence on health in any aspect.

First Conference on Advanced Production and Processing – ICAPP was held on 10 and 11 October 2019 at Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, Serbia.
ICAPP is a comprehensive scientific conference with a focus on advanced research on production and processing in various fields of technology.
The ByProExtract team member, Senka Vidović, Full Professor, was a main organizator of this conference.

The public thesis defense by student Jovana Grgić, entitled “ High-Voltage Electric Discharge Extraction of Bioactive Compounds From Tobacco Waste ” was held on September 30, 2019 at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek. The thesis was written under the mentorship of Stela Jokić, PhD, full professor, principal investigator on ByProExtract project.
The experimental part of the graduate thesis was realized at the Sub-department of Carbohydrates Technology, Sub-department of Process Design and Construction Materials, and at Sub-department of Applied Chemistry and Instrumental Methods at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek, within the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin “(HRZZ-UIP-2017-05-9909).
Experimental part of the thesis was made with technical assistance Marija Banožić, an associate at the ByProExtract project.
Student presented a good quality of her research, after which she answered the questions of the defense committee. On the basis of all this, the defense committee presented the decision that Jovana Grgić successfully defended her graduate thesis with an excellent grade and obtained master degree in process engineering.

The organization of the European Researchers’ Night is the main activity of the project Techno-Past Techno-Future; European Researchers’ Night which is funded under the EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation 2014 – 2020 – Horizon 2020. The Techno-Past Techno-Future; European Researchers’ Night project is carried out by eighteen partners: the Ministry of Science and Education, the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, the Ruđer Bošković Institute, the Old Church Slavonic Institute, the Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation, the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences, the British Council, the University of Zagreb, the University of Split, the University of Zadar, the University of Dubrovnik, the University of Pula, the University of Rijeka, the University of Osijek, the State Intellectual Property Office, the Catholic University of Croatia, the University North and the Croatian Science Foundation.
The event is traditionally held every year across Europe on the last Friday in September from 17 to 22 o’clock. On the cities’ public areas, Croatian researchers will have desks with interactive content, primarily intended for the younger population. The programme in Osijek included pre-activity event organized by Faculty of Food Technology Osijek (September 13th, 2019), and main stage activity organized by University of Osijek (September 27th, 2019). Activities are mainly intended for the younger population, i.e. the primary and secondary school children and the general public, and their purpose is fun, learning through play and presentations, and raising awareness of the general public about the main messages of the Techno-Past Techno-Future; European Researchers’ Night project.
ByProExtract team members have also participated in organizational activities, both in pre-activity and main activity events.

ByProExtracts team members participated on ECCE12 & ECAB5, precisely 12th European Congress of Chemical Engineering and 5th European Congress of Applied Biotechnology in Florence (Italy) in the period from 15th to 17th September 2019. One of the topics and subjects of the project is therefore presented by a poster presentation entitled „Prediction of Hesperidin Content in Orange Peel Extract using Artificial Neural Network Model“ (Jokić, Stela; Šafranko, Silvija; Jakovljević, Martina; Cikoš, Ana-Marija; Bilić, Mate; Molnar, Maja).

The ByProExtract project under the coordination of Stela Jokić, Full Professor, was promoted in two occasions in the “Chemistry in Industry”, a scientific journal that publishes scientific and professional papers in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering:
1) In a short review about the main aims and ideas on which is based the concept of ByProExtract project, and also focusing on the professional equipment also provided from the HRZZ (Croatian Science Foundation) funding.
