Jelena Vladić, PhD is one of the winners of the recognition and national scholarship within the prestigious international program L’Oréal-UNESCO “For Women in Science” for 2020. This award is given to the best young scientists for exceptional scientific research and aims to support outstanding female researchers in their further scientific and professional development. The award is realized in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, the National Commission for UNESCO, and the company L’Oreal Balkan.

Stela Jokić, project leader and Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team member participated at Conference: “Tobacco and tobacco products: yesterday, today, tomorrow”. Conference was organized by Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb on the Zoom platform.
Lecture entitled “Green extraction techniques of nicotine from tobacco waste: possibilities, limitations and potential application” was given by Marija Banožić, ByProExtract Team member.

Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team member participated at science school „Integrated approach to research of the impact of industrial waste landfills on the environment“. The science school was held on from 23 to 27 November on Institute Ruđer Bošković Zagreb.
The scientific school is intended for doctoral students in the field of natural sciences and all doctoral students who deal with landfills and their impact on the environment.
The program of the scientific school includes a series of lectures that will introduce participants to different scientific approaches in the research of industrial waste, its application as a secondary raw material and the impact of such landfills on the environment.

Also, participants had opportunity to participate with an oral or poster presentation to present their work.
Marija Banožić participated with poster presentation entitled “Application of innovative extraction techniques in sustainable tobacco waste management”.

Stela Jokić, full professor and principal investigator of ByProExtract project (funded by Croatian Science Foundation) was awarded with prestigious Rikard Podhorsky Annual Award of Croatian Academy of Engineering (HATZ), granted to a Member of HATZ, a prominent scientist, for hers especially valuable scientific and professional achievements. The principal investigator Stela Jokić received Award at the Meeting of the Croatian Academy of Engineering held on October 24, 2020, at University of Zagreb.

The public thesis defense by student Ana-Marija Gotal, entitled “Pulsed Electric Field Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Tobacco Waste” was held on September 29, 2020 at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek. The thesis was written under the mentorship of Ante Lončarić, PhD, assistant professor and under co-mentorship of Krunoslav Aladić, PhD, assistant professor.
The experimental part of the graduate thesis was realized at the Sub-department of Process Design and Construction Materials and Sub-department of Carbohydrates Technology at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek, within the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“ (HRZZ-UIP-2017-05-9909). The student presented an excellent quality of her research, and answered the questions of the defense committee. Based on that, the defense committee presented the decision that Ana-Marija Gotal successfully defended her graduate thesis with an excellent grade.

International Conference 18th Ružička Days was traditionally held in Vukovar, Croatia, on the 16th and 18th September 2020 under the slogan “TODAY SCIENCE TOMORROW INDUSTRY”.
The conference was organized by the Croatian Society of Chemical Engineers (CSCE) and its partners, Faculty of Food Technology of University of Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, European Chemical Society (EuCheMS), and European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) .

The “Ružička’s Days” is a traditional review of scientific activity from the field of chemistry, chemical & biochemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and related sciences, dedicated to the memory of the famous Croatian chemist and first Croatian Nobel Prize laureate professor Lavoslav (Leopold) Ružička.

The topic of the 18th meeting is “Today Science – Tommorow Industry” since the organizing committee wishes to emphasize the importance of the implementation of science research and achievements. The program was included plenary lectures of invited renowned speakers and scientific poster sessions.
ByProExtracts team members has also participated and presented their research papers.

Jelena Vladić, PhD completed a research stay at the BOKU University in Vienna, Austria. Dr Vladić conducted the research from March to September within the Joint Excellence in Science and Humanities programme and scientific research grant awarded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Furthermore, Dr Vladić worked on the extraction of bioactive components from natural resources and valorization of food waste by applying innovative non-thermal techniques such as the Pulse Electric Field (PEF) and High Pressure.
