The public doctoral thesis defense by PhD student Nika Pavlović, entitled “Application of innovative techniques for extracting bioactive components from cocoa shell” was held on July 13, 2020 at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek. The doctoral thesis was done under the supervision by Stela Jokić, PhD, full professor, and under the the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin“ (UIP-2017-05-9909).
PhD student presented her research, after which she answered the questions of the defense committee. On the basis of all this, the defense committee presented the decision that Nika Pavlović successfully defended her PhD thesis.

The International Scientific Conference FOOD INDUSTRY BY-PRODUCTS organized by the Faculty of Food Technology, University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek, The Polytechnic of Požega, Association for Nutrition and Dietetics “Food to Health” (BiH), Public Institution “Nature park“ Kopački rit ”and European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group – EHEDG (Germany) was held on 26 June in Kopački Rit.
The Conference, the publication of the Book of Abstracts and the promo-materials were funded by the Croatian Science Foundation within the project “Application of innovative techniques for extraction of bioactive components from plant by-products” (UIP-2017-05-9909). Although held for the first time, this conference proved to be very interesting to the scientific community as well as industry and general aduience, and it was concluded that it should continue to be held every year.

The scientific programme of the Congress included 11 invited lectures and presentations of the book ” Some possibilities for utilization of food industry by-products 2″ . Lecture entitled “Application of innovative techniques for extraction of bioactive components from plant by-products” was given by Marija Banožić in the name of author group (Krunoslav Aladić, Ines Banjari, Silvija Šafranko, Nika Pavlović, Jelena Vladić, Senka Vidović, Stela Jokić- entire ByProExtract Team. During the presentation, the overall results of the project as well as future activities were presented.

The public thesis defense by student Filip Kolarević, entitled “An application of deep eutectic solvents in extraction of hesperidin from mandarin peels” was held on May 15, 2020 at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek. The thesis was written under the mentorship of Stela Jokić, PhD, full professor, principal investigator on ByProExtract project.

The experimental part of the graduate thesis was realized at the Sub-department of Process Design and Construction Materials at the Faculty of Food Technology in Osijek, within the project “Application of innovative techniques of the extraction of bioactive components from by-products of plant origin “(HRZZ-UIP-2017-05-9909).
Student presented a good quality of his research, after which he answered the questions of the defense committee. On the basis of all this, the defense committee presented the decision that Filip Kolarević successfully defended his graduate thesis with an excellent grade.

Silvija Šafranko and Marija Banožić, ByProExtract team members participated at Meeting of Young Chemical Engineers 2020. The conference was held on from 20 to 21 February 2020 in Zagreb, on Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Zagreb. During the poster sessions, they presented research from ByProExtract project.
First Meeting of Young Chemical Engineers took place in February 1996. on Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb. Since then, it regularly takes place every two years. The Meeting was conceived as a conference where young chemical engineers, and engineers of related professions, can gain first experiences in presenting results of their research. This year, the Meeting was held in its 13th edition, gathering over 200 participants with 149 presentations.

ByProExtract project team members from Faculty of Food Technology Osijek, with Principal Investigator Stela Jokić, full professor, visited Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, where they had great opportunity to see the available equipment, and to discuss further steps in the next project improvements with possibilities of PhD student and staff exchange.

Faculty of Food Technology Osijek and the Parkinson’s Disease Association “Buđenje” promoted their new book entitled “Hrana i Parkinsonova bolest” (Food and Parkinson’s Disease) on 6th February 2020 in Faculty’s library by authors Svetlana Tomić and Ines Banjari, researcher on the ByProExtract project,

National Science Awards honoring the greatest achievements in science and its popularity in the past year were awarded on Monday, December 16th, 2019 in the Croatian Parliament.
For the popularization and promotion of science in the field of biotechnical sciences, the annual award was given to Steli Jokić, PhD, Full professor.

A public PhD dissertation thesis defense of Marija Banožić, under the title ”Application of innovative extraction techniques of bioactive compounds from tobacco waste ” was held on December 13, 2019 in front of the Committee for accepting the PhD dissertation Thesis, members of the PhD Commission, professors and associates of the Faculty of Food Technology Osijek.
The proposed research will be conducted in the framework of the ByProExtract project.

On December 13, 2019, 2nd Year-end meeting research group members was held. At the meeting, project member evaluated their work in the last year, and prepared goals for the next year. According to work in the previous year, they are all convinced of the continued successful collaboration on the ByProExtract project and are looking forward to new scientific knowledge.
All project team member were present at the meeting.
